The Assistant Chief has direct administrative and professional supervision of interdisciplinary staff assigned or annexed to the MHRRTP (e.g. Nurse Practitioners, Secretarial staff, Nurse managers, Social Service Assistants, Psychologists, Social Workers, Nursing Staff, Addiction Therapists, Peer Support Specialists, Vocational Rehabilitation Staff, and Homeless Program Staff). Responsibilities also include:
*The incumbent considers all factors in assessing applicants for admission into the MHRRTP. The multi-program residential facility has substance abuse care, dual diagnosis, posttraumatic stress disorder, and homeless programs from which to choose. As Vice-Chair of a multidisciplinary screening board decisions are made regarding treatment directions. If admission is decided upon, the incumbent coordinates the admission with all affected parties.
*The incumbent coordinates the Quality Improvement Program with the MHRRTP and conducts Point of Care reviews to enhance performance in the program as well a meet or exceed regulatory agency standards.
*The incumbent will schedule the staff to provide the required supervision on all shifts and settings of the residential treatment programs.
*The incumbent will plan work to be accomplished by clinical staff, training classes for residents, staff training, to be completed within a designated time frame.
*The incumbent will assign work based on priorities, consideration of difficulty and the capabilities of the employees.
*The incumbent will evaluate work performance on a continuous basis, providing oral and written feedback when indicated.
*The incumbent will give advice, counsel or instructions to employees on work and administrative matters.
*The incumbent will interview candidates for vacancy positions and recommend appointments.
*The incumbent will hear and resolve complaints, refer group grievances and serious, unresolved complaints to a higher level.
*Effect minor disciplinary measures and recommend action for more serious cases.
*The incumbent counsels residents living within the MHRRTP on issues of homelessness, substance abuse, trauma, relationship problems as well as issues of daily living within their level of experience and/or skills.
*The incumbent makes assessments of the veterans referred and the type and scope of services required by each applicant. They negotiate admission needs with each of the five programs within the MHRRTP. They make judgments about the safety and security of the residents within the facility. They represent the VA and the Chief, MHRRTP to the community, residents, families, agencies, legislators, surveying bodies and other VA's. They advise the Chief, MHRRTP of any issues which need to be resolved on a higher level.

However, as this position requires a licensed professional, the physical demands remain equivalent to the clinical requirements for the position. The clinical component of this position provides direct services to patients and their families through casework. Normal work of the position requires visual acuity (with the ability to read typewritten characters without strain, corrective lenses permitted), keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially moderate levels of lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds). The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
