Responsible for careful observation and evaluation of short term outpatients receiving surgical treatments. This includes patient assessment, pre-operative care and readiness, post-operative care, and adequate home care instructions at discharge.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:
Provides skilled nursing care for day-surgery patients throughout their surgical experience, appropriate to the age of the patient served, in conformance with hospital policy and AORN standards of care.
Follows established protocols and maintains a safe environment.
Assist with and/or initiates emergency measures appropriately.
Provides adequate peri-operative instructions.
Responsible for correct transcription of surgeons' orders, accurate documentation of all care given, and charging appropriately for supplies, equipment, and procedures.
Identifies goals through the care planning process.
Actively participates in Performance Improvement.
Ensures individual skills are current.
Maintains current knowledge of procedures, techniques, and equipment.
Accepts accountability for own actions.
Admits surgical patients to the day surgery area.
Evaluates patients and appropriately communicates pertinent data to surgeon or CRNA.
Ensures that pre-op chart is complete before patient is taken to surgery.
Initiates and maintains IVs as ordered.
Accompanies patients to surgery and assists in the surgical department as requested.
Responsible for correct OR schedule and coordination of cases.
Ensures adequate supply levels and properly functioning equipment in Day Surgery.
Participates in orientation of new personnel.
Shares responsibility for pre-op visits and post-op phone calls with PACU nurse.
Maintains open communication with other departments.
Participates in Quality Assurance.
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current Montana licensure as a Registered Nurse.
Has knowledge of laws and legal interpretations as they relate to peri-operative care.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
Presents a professional and caring attitude to patients and staff.
Has legible handwriting.
ACLS & PALS certification, surgical experience.
