The Nurse Manager provides timely information regarding emergencies, unusual occurrences or issues that impact on nursing practice or operations to the Nurse Executive/Associate Director for Nursing and Patient Care Services (ADPCS). Demonstrates the ability to lead his/her department with supervision from the Chief Nurse, Acute Care in a manner which promotes the VHA objectives including Leading Change, Leading People, Financial Stewardship, Building Coalitions and Results Driving Outcomes: Demonstrates effective leadership in using nursing process and evidence-based practice in collaboration with all interdisciplinary services to develop and implement systems to provide high quality patient-centered care; Responsible for completing and analyzing Staffing Methodology and NHPPD or other data to drive staffing activities with supervision from the Chief Nurse, Acute Care; takes corrective actions as necessary and assures staffing levels are maintained and continues to evaluate staffing needs; submitting requests for additional staff and/or to backfill vacant positions; Reviews performance measures, i.e. diversion reviews, AES and other data for trends and implements early intervention; Provides mentoring and guidance to develop nursing staff and nursing students. Removes barriers through active collaboration with Chief Nurses, nursing supervisors, providers, site managers, and support services. Manages resources effectively to improve overall patient outcomes, using the group process in decision-making. Assesses the educational needs for staff and collaborates to assure that learning needs are met. Applies evidenced-based practice principles to validate and/or improve nursing practice. Manages supplies and equipment inventories and assures equipment is maintained and in working order. Completes annual performance reviews and proficiencies in a timely manner and effectively maintains competency files, assuring competency and safe practice for assigned staff. Performs human resource functions including behavioral interviewing for selection of staff, in a fair unbiased diverse environment. Promptly submits documentation for staff promotions and awards. Assures a safe patient environment and immediately corrects deficiencies. Supports a work climate that is conducive to recruitment and retention of staff.
