The Registered Nurse (Day Surgery) will be assigned to Nursing Service and is under the supervision of a Nurse Manager or other immediate supervisor who provides the administrative supervision and general instruction, plans and assigns work, assigns time schedules, approves leave, and completes performance evaluations. Ability to work in a fast paced environment with rapid veteran/patient turnover and varying acuity levels. Ability to clearly and concisely communicate with anesthesia and surgeons and accurately report changes and concerns in a timely manner. Ability to work 6a-6p with additional weekends shift coverage during the current pandemic related to COVID testing and screening. Willingness to learn all aspects of unit including preoperative and postoperative preparation of day surgery patients with ability to educate veterans/patients in manner best suited to their learning ability including oral, written and demonstrative teaching. Excellent telephone etiquette and ability to communicate in positive manner via both electronically and telephonically with healthcare providers and veterans/patients. Critical thinking skills and rapid problem solving skills with the ability to detect quickly changing veteran/patient physiological status or detect developing problems and proactively manage to prevent deterioration. Be a team player with wise use of time, attendance and attitude. Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing an/or supervising direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient of family education, patient self-management after discharge, an supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. Administers medication and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs.
