The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare (VAGLAHS) is seeking to hire a Registered Nurse (RN) for the Infection Prevention & Control Services (IP&Cs), in Quality Management. The RN of IP&C will ensure that Veteran-centered health care is provided in a timely, accessible & respectful manner, consistent with the mission, goals & objectives of the Veteran's Health Administration. Responsible to ensure that the highest possible quality of care is achieved & a safe therapeutic environment Is provided. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required, Master's degree in Nursing highly desirable. At least one year of experience in Infection control is preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with multiple service lines and disciplines preferred Proven ability to facilitate group problem solving preferred Demonstrate computer literacy and use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel preferred Excellent organizational, communication, writing and time management skills preferred Ability to work independently with minimal supervision preferred Demonstrated ability in data tracking, management, analysis, and feedback of results preferred Proven ability to utilize sound judgment in making infection prevention & control decisions preferred Ability to work variable and flexible tours to meet program needs and demands preferred Demonstrated ability to accurately implement VA GLA policies, regulations, standards of care and standards of practice preferred Demonstrates advanced leadership skills in the nursing process such as coordinating, assessing, implementing and evaluating hospital-wide initiative/programs is highly desirable Experience in providing direction and education for all staff including other services preferred Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. For foreign education equivalency the only certifying body the VA recognizes is CGFNS and its' subsidiary, International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight pulling and pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing aid permitted. This authority also includes instituting appropriate control measures when it is necessary for the safety of patients, visitors and staff Educating and training healthcare staff in protocol to limit and contain infectious pathogens Developing and implementing plans to prevent patients from spreading communicable diseases throughout the hospital and community Implementing and enforcing infection control practices and guidelines set forth by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Gathering, analyzing, and presenting infectious data, facts, and trends to other healthcare professionals and medical staff participating in committees, including but not limited to Infection Control, Safety, Product Evaluation, and conducting Performance Improvement activities Participates in the review and selection of germicides, cleaning products, personal protective equipment, disinfectants, sterilant, and safety devices in use throughout the facility Implements and evaluates surveillance activities using established definitions and criteria for the identification and compliance in safety standards of OSHA, CMS, National Patient Safety Goals, etc. Conducts Environment of Care (EOC) rounds on a regular basis to monitor compliance with safety standards Provides direct patient care to an assigned group of patients as needed.
